I'm always conflicted when AU versions of my OTPs appear, because
1. It validates the ship in that hey, the subtext is intentional, maybe they are together Off Screen!
2. In this this day and age...why is it only AU, and usually where it is now heterosexual (Captain America and Iron Woman, though imma gonna pretend that CA was swapped too), OR, where the guys are now lipstick lesbians;

I think the love between John and Chas is totally canon, but starting a relationship is complicated because of Chas' wife and Chas' issue and therefore huge potential Damage.

...but speaking of Damage...what about the arc where John's hellspawn comes back to wreck havoc on his human family? The demonic possession by Nergal loosened Chas's inhibitions and revealed a lot of suppressed darkness, first he did a teenage prostitute, and then he hit his wife. Well, what if the first person Chas ran into, was John, what if John was at Chas'mercy instead?
